There are many great hiking trails in Boulder. A few are:

Chautauqua Park- located on Baseline and 9th.

Bear Peak Trail (difficult)
1850 Table Mesa Dr, next to the National Center for Atmospheric Research

17 St Trailhead- located baseline and 17th (at the end of 17th)

Mt. Sanitas Trail- Drive up Mapleton past First street, go into canyon, parking on left, trail on right

I am also a fan of Gregory canyon which is in the Chataqua area, but far less crowded. I also enjoy going to Eldorado Canyon( 5mi southwest of Boulder, off of Highway 93). I enjoy the Eldorado Canyon Trail(3.5)  and the Walker ranch loop (7.5mi). If you are wanting to get away form the crowds, drive up Boulder canyon to Nederland and the trails are wonderful!

Mt Sanitas is a great and quick hike with great views of Boulder and the mountains. There is parking at the base off of Sunshine canyon.

I like the Rattlesnake Gulch trail at Eldorado Springs. As for Sanitas, everyone seems to love it but I HATE it! Getting down is too treacherous.

Of course you could go up to Sanitas or Chautauqua if you want something quick that's close by, but I'd highly recommend heading up to Rocky Mountain National Park. It's only about 45 minutes north up in Estes Park, and there's a TON of stuff to hike. Just so you know though, there's a fee to enter the park. I think it's about 8 bucks, which really isn't very much if you split it with friends.

Although Chataqua and some of the others are closer, for intermediate hiking I would recommend Rocky Mountain National Park. Even though it is a little further, it is well worth the experience.

If your actually intermediate and have a couple days, Mt. Bierstadt is pretty easy as far as 14ers go. Amazing mountain lakes!
